Where

The movie takes place from D-Day on the Omaha Beach front, to the deep trenches of Central France. There is also a multi-thread story that takes place in America.

Why

The entire rescue of Private Ryan is made because he lost three of his brothers in different parts of the world, and the American government doesn't want to send the last boy home in a body bag to his mother. A small group of men is selected to go into central France, so they can bring Ryan home to his mother safe and sound.
